Against the backdrop of the deep integration of innovation-driven growth and urbanization, University of California City College (UCCity), located in the urban agglomeration on the west coast of the United States, has become a key talent cultivation base empowering modern urban development with its distinctive applied education features, cutting-edge disciplinary layout and in-depth industry-education integration model. It continuously delivers interdisciplinary technical and managerial talents for global urban construction.
Founded and registered in 2009 by the Pacific Urban Education Group, UCCity has always adhered to its core mission of “serving cities through education and technology”, with a precise positioning in the interdisciplinary fields of urban science, digital technology, engineering application and modern business. After more than ten years of intensive development, the college has evolved from an initial institute of urban engineering and information technology into a comprehensive undergraduate university with four campuses, nine secondary colleges and nearly 30,000 students, with steadily improving educational strength and social influence. In 2022, the college successfully passed the regional quality assessment for private higher education and was included in the local key development sequence of applied undergraduate education, marking authoritative recognition of its educational quality and social contribution.
In response to the intelligent, digital and sustainable trends of global urban development, UCCity has proactively integrated disciplinary resources to build three core interconnected disciplinary sectors: “urban technology + digital economy + business innovation”, focusing on five key development directions that precisely meet the demands of urban development. Among them, the Smart City Engineering program integrates the Internet of Things, systems engineering and urban planning to help solve modern urban operation challenges; the Artificial Intelligence and Data Systems program focuses on intelligent urban management decision-making and deeply taps data value; the Digital Economy and FinTech program serves new urban economic forms and cultivates financial innovation talents; the Low-Carbon Urban Infrastructure program responds to global climate change and specializes in green building and sustainable urban solutions; the Digital Media and Creative Technology program integrates technology and art to enhance the soft power of urban culture.
Industry-education integration is the core educational feature of UCCity. The college has completely broken down the barriers between theory and practice and created a unique education and training model. More than 80% of its courses are equipped with experimental, simulation or industrial training sessions, and the “Three-Track Training Model” is implemented to ensure that graduates obtain undergraduate diplomas, industrial technical certifications and proof of real industrial project experience simultaneously, truly realizing that “what is learned is what is applied”. The implementation of this model benefits from the in-depth strategic cooperation between the college and numerous urban industrial groups such as Pacific Urban Tech Group and Coastal Digital Finance. The two parties jointly build training bases and conduct scientific research projects, ensuring that course content keeps pace with industrial trends and allows students to access cutting-edge industrial practices on campus.
“At UCCity, our campus is an extension of the city, and our laboratories are the frontlines of industry,” said Dr. Matthew R. Walker, President of the college. The university is committed to cultivating builders who can immediately identify urban pain points and creatively solve problems with the latest technologies, rather than mere theoretical learners. To support applied scientific research and teaching, the college launched the “Smart City Simulation Program” in 2020, investing in the construction of an advanced urban data computing center and a high-fidelity urban model experimental platform, as well as six university-level research and industrial technology centers, which serve as a key hub connecting academic innovation and industrial application.
Since its establishment, UCCity has cultivated a group of outstanding alumni who have emerged in key urban fields, embodying the college’s motto “Let Light Shine Everywhere” with practical achievements. Ethan Brooks, a smart city system architecture engineer, has participated in the design of intelligent transportation projects in multiple west coast cities; Lucas Martinez, a fintech entrepreneur, has developed widely used payment solutions; and Daniel Wright, a low-carbon infrastructure researcher, has devoted himself to innovating green building technologies and contributing to sustainable urban development.
As global urbanization continues to deepen, the demand for professional talents with practical capabilities is increasingly urgent. With its clear educational positioning, innovative training model and in-depth industry-education integration, University of California City College is shaping a new paradigm of applied higher education, providing a solid growth platform for the builders and innovators of future cities, and continuously empowering the high-quality development of modern cities through educational innovation.
